What's New
At Maple Island Quilts
New Bag Pattern –Bagavond
I do quite a few one night stays visiting with my Mom and other friends and wanted a bag big enough to hold what I need for just one night. Because I always have work with me, it will hold your electronics or file folders. The bag has extra large outside pockets and inside pockets that are shallow for the phone charger or other small things. You can use 4 fabrics as shown on the cover or mix it up and use up to 7 fabrics (see gallery). The bag is 14” wide, 16” tall and 7” deep with a fun extra wide handle that is pleated to fit on your shoulder as you go from the car to your destination. Have a good trip!

New Quilt Pattern – Stackables 1
A bold, quick and easy design that can be done with just 2 fabrics plus an accent edge or one main fabric combined with multiple background pieces and an edge fabric. The blocks look like they are stacked onto each other as they move down the row. The pattern has 2 sizes, lap and queen with 10 different ways to choose your fabrics, from one row fabric, background fabric and edge up to 4 row fabrics and multiple fat quarters for the background. 9” blocks.

New Quilt Pattern – Stackables 2
We’ve been receiving lots of requests for a fat quarter quilt that would work with the bundles of fat quarters that come from new collections or a bundle put together from your favorite shop. Often when working with a collection there are too many mediums and not enough contrast but with the edge fabric defining the blocks there is no problem letting each fabric speak. There are 4 sizes from wall to queen. The quilt on the cover is the lap size and has a checkerboard border as does the wall size. The twin and queen do not have a border for a very modern, clean look. Yardage for the edge fabric but the rest of the quilt is all fat quarters for these 9” blocks. Many of you will be able to work from your collection at home to create this fun quilt.

New Pattern – Kard Keeper
Where do you carry all those extra cards – loyalty shopping cards, gift cards and others? Mine were either on my desk at home (forgotten) or in the bottom of my bag wrapped in a large purple rubber band. The Kard Keeper is stylish storage for those extra cards. It is a little fabric pocket secured with a hair elastic. Fun to do with a tiny bit of fabric and perfect for gift giving. You can jazz them up with beads, crystals, baby ric rac or fancy stitching and trim the edges with a specialty rotary blade or pinking shears. As a mother of boys, I had no idea there were so many fun ways to secure hair or the Kard Keeper! With a small pleat on the bottom the Kard Keeper can expand to hold up to 30 cards. Finished size about 2 ¾” x 4 ¾”. The pattern is a jumbo postcard, pictures on one side and instructions on the back side.

I am proud to be participating in the Alzheimer's Art
Quilt Initiative, a program to raise awareness and fund
research for Alzheimer’s disease. It has two parts: a traveling
art quilt exhibit interpreting Alzheimer’s in fiber art
that will tour the US for three years and an on-going sale of
small art quilts. All proceeds from both the traveling show and
the small art quilt sale will go to Alzheimer’s research.
If you would like to be involved you can read all the details
at www.alzquilts.org.
There
is now a book of all the quilts in the traveling exhibit. The designer
of each quilt tells a bit of their quilts story. It
is quite a book. Consider giving the book to any friend that is
dealing with Alzheimer’s. See the book at www.alzquilts.org
I made a quilt for the traveling show in honor of my
mother in law, Martha Louise Bowles. Russian Olive Trees (Photo
on Right) is the quilt that I made for the traveling show. The
traveling show will be something you will want to see as many of
your favorite fiber artists will be involved.
